It’s all about power.

Donald Trump is not the first president who has railed against rampant illegal immigration. He is not the first to support the building of a wall/barricade along the Mexican border. It is not just a Donald Trump issue. It’s an historical American issue supported by both sides of the aisle over the years. Until now.

In 2006, the Secure Fence Act was passed by congress allowing for the construction of nearly 700 miles of border barriers, i.e., walls, fences. The vote passed in the senate, 80-19.  Could that happen today? Among those who voted for the bill were Senators Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and Chuck Schumer. Anyone can check Youtube and find several examples of those notables on the left who, 10-20 years ago, made speeches in support of a border barrier.

According to the Department of Homeland Security, half of the 2000 mile Mexican border is already protected from mass migration due to terrain. With roughly 700 miles complete, that still leaves 300 or more miles of open borders that need fixing or else the caravans will continue and illegal immigrants will never cease swarming into our country.

The question arises, why are political progressives so intent now on preventing additional security measures to keep illegal immigrants from teeming into the United States? After all, this is a security problem that affects all taxpaying Americans of all colors, nationalities and political leanings. It also impacts economy, education, health matters, gang activity, drug trafficking, sex crimes, courts and prisons. That’s not to mention the job market when illegals are hired for farming, construction and other projects at below minimum wages. Historically, that fattens income for the rich while undercutting jobs from law-abiding American workers including “legal” immigrants, by the millions.

Union leader, Cesar Chavez, founder of the National Farm Workers Union in 1962, a devout liberal-progressive of his time, was adamant about stopping illegal immigration, because it infringed on the rights and betterment of “legal” immigrants who came to America.

During his presidency, Bill Clinton initiated enforcement action against employers who would not screen immigrants via e-Verify systems. He also signed an executive order that would ban contracts to companies that hired illegals. During his SOTU address in 1996, he sounded more like Donald Trump. “Americans are rightly disturbed by the large numbers of illegal aliens entering our country. The jobs they hold might otherwise be held by citizens or legal immigrants. The public services they use impose burdens on our taxpayers.”

In comments to the press, 2005, then-Senator  Barack Obama, stated, “We simply cannot allow people to pour into the United States undetected, undocumented, unchecked and circumventing the line of people who are waiting patiently, diligently and lawfully.”

Progressives are singing a different tune in 2018, allegedly because they dislike the current president. Or, is there a more sinister motive?

In 1980, California’s voters overwhelmingly elected conservative Ronald Reagan for president, as they did in 1988 for George H.W. Bush.  Less than thirty years later, California’s Democrat populations outvoted the Republican candidate by three million votes in 2016. What has changed?

Demographics changed. Culture changed. With that, voters in many states have swung far to the left. Immigration, legal and illegal, has transformed the political landscape in traditional red states like California, Arizona, Nevada and Texas to mostly blue.

State and local politicians are luring illegal immigrants, including criminals, to cities that are declared as “sanctuary.” Some mayors and governors have approved of law breaking activity. Without a doubt, illegals are at the voting booths casting illegal ballots, because all they need is a driver’s license and no proof of eligibility.

Greedy politicians are sowing the seeds for politically transforming the nation to their side by farming Democrats. They just need to protect illegal immigrants and keep those babies coming who eventually become automatic citizens, Democrats of course, and future voters by the millions. They are all part of the revolution, whether they know it or not. The plan is brilliant and it is working. National dominance is just a matter of time.

Is it any wonder that the Schumer/Pelosi/Obama wing of America, now sing a different tune than they did years ago. Supporting illegals and protecting criminals has nothing to do with compassion. It’s all about stacking the deck with future Democrats. It’s all about power.

Handing out welcome mats, freebees, welfare, and criminal justice protections to illegals have paid off at the voting booths. The Democratic Party smells political victory in the future.

Who’s next? Venezuelans are starved for freedom. So are others. There are dirt-poor people all over South America, Africa and Asia, all they need is transportation to get here. The slippery slope is not far off. When that happens, America will never be the same. The radical left will conquer and the constitution will not survive. When we older folks are dead and gone, more of the likes of Orcasio-Cortez and Rashida Tlaib will rise to power. Socialism will grow, capitalism will fall. Campaigns will begin to amend the constitution, particularly as it pertains to freedoms of speech and rights to bear arms.

We are the lucky ones, having lived in the best of times.

Well said! Are we too late to stop what is happening? Wake up America before we lose what we inherited.

A very accurate observation of the Democratic Party and its “contemporary evolution from the “Party of and for the Worker” to the “Party of the Progressives” and more accurately the party of the radical far left.
Those of us because, of long lives and in reality shortend future years, will not witness this political transformation of the America we respected, grew up with, fought for and still love. We young school boys, at the time in 1956, can also clearly remember Nikita Khrushchev’s promise to take over America without firing a shot and destroying America from within. That quote has remained clearly with me throughout my life and police career as I watched the A.C.L.U. and other entities rework the fabric of American life.
Not that long ago as children we “hid under our desks” during practices of a nuclear attack in our schoolrooms. Today the politicians who are sworn to uphold the Constitution rally against ” an outdated piece of paper.” As well as the “fifth estate” fails in basic reporting.
Only history and our grandchildren, sadly, will remember the America we know and knew.

What frosts me is that the Dems in the Congress think they know more about what works at the border than the agents who are actually on the job there every day and night and have been for many years. They want a wall or some kind of fencing that’s very stout. So yes, this standoff is not about border security, it’s all about power, about hating Trump.

There is $5.6 billion available from all the money we give – yes, “give” – to foreign countries.

Here’s what the Rs should be looking at. Trump wants money for infrastructure. So do the Dems. Let the House pass a infrastructure bill and send it over to the Senate. McConnell will tell Pelosi, gee, Nancy, we really like your bill and we can pass it, but we won’t unless and until you in include $5.6 billion for a border wall. Now that’s what power looks like from the R side!

I totally understand your comments and so appreciate them that I will use them in my opinion statement to the newspaper. Needless to say, I will not quote you directly but I so appreciate your verbalization of the dilemma that is so prevalent in the news today I think it should be sent out to as many people as possible.

Thank you for your political savvy that so many people lack today. Every day we become, as a country, more like a person who thinks they owe everyone else for their situation in life and therefore should give up what they have to be sure these other folks have all they require without having to engage in work to get it.

As long as man exists, greed will also exist. We need to help these people, but we should do so by teaching them in their own country, feeding them as necessary until they can do so themselves or become trading partners trading their wares for food or whatever else they need.

We are blessed in this country to have everything that God placed on this wonderful continent. Maybe the time has arrived that some of those plush jungles of South America become crop bearing food farms which would feed a lot of their people. After all, did our ancestors not clear the land, remove the rock, and work to make this the country of farmers and workers that we are?

    • Larry Schuth January 7, 2019 at 6:57 pm #

Much of the jungles of South America has been cleared to grow soybeans and beef. The Amazon basin has 20% of the world’s fresh water and it is being recyled continuously by nature. If too many trees are cleared that could stop and that would be a huge problem for all of us. I do strongly agree with the article and most of what you have written. I am 78 and probably part of the last generation to be as free as we are. I feel it is all downhill from here. I don’t know why the voters can’t understand what is happening in front of them.

Right on Marshall. I cannot believe that voters put these clowns in the Congress. The senator from Arizona is the most unqualified person I have ever seen elected. The house now has several muslums who want to change the laws and the constitution of the USA. Where do these people come from??? You were absolutely right when you wrote your book. They are gaining in their attempt to get shariah law in this country. I fear for my daughter and grandson for they will bear the brunt of the coming insurrection.

  6. EILEEN January 7, 2019 at 12:14 pm #

Very well said, Marshall. I believe the Dems are intent on destroying our nation

As always, I highly respect your opinion, but, as always, I take issue with some of your logic. For example, you seem to retreat to a position of “when all else fails, blame it on the Dems”. As a Regan Republican, I’d like to believe that, but I don’t!! Here’s why —

The vast majority of the illegals come here for JOBS. Many go to work for Republican firms like the various Trump resorts that welcome illegal workers. Our Secret Service has already identified several that work at Trump’s New Jersey resort. As long as we fail to enforce employment restrictions on the hiring of illegals, they will continue to come here for jobs.

Illegal immigration declined Sharpley during the Obama administration. Should those Dems not take credit for that?

You imply that the “Blue Wave” was the result of demographic changes. Please!! Think for a minute. The failure of our Republican party to do what Reagan and Lincoln preached and it’s willingness to support Trump even when he’s totally wrong motivated many voters to shift their support. This is simply NOT the GOP of the good old days. It has become a party with no public conscious. They no longer represent the United States, they simply represent the Party. The Dems , unfortunately, are readily filling the vacuum created by our MAGA Party.

Yes, we need tighter border security. Can’t argue that. Building a 10ft high concrete wall is just not the answer. The GOP is willing to spend $5.6 billion on Trump’s campaign promise that isn’t really going to solve the problem. AND they want to blame it all on the DEMS. Perhaps we need to start looking more critically at our own party, fix our own problems and see if we can wash away that blue wave. Just blaming the Dems is not getting us anywhere.

A lookat the history of Democracy shows when the electorate figure out who will give them “free” things, Democracy will cease to exist!

Another example of why “I’m glad I’m old”. The further the left goes left the further I go right.

I have often admired your common sense (though sometimes controversial) comments on a wide variety of topics, as expressed in your Florida Today column. Today you have taken a bold and probably not very popular stance on sex offender sentences. To say there are very few people advocating for those accused would be a huge understatement! But again you have shone light into one of those dark corners most folks avoid. Unfortunately a multitude of diverse crimes, from violent rape to peeing in the bushes, have managed to get lumped together as “sex crimes” often with, (as you pointed out), life-long consequences.
The acceptance of the huge disparity in degree of punishment for these crimes may also make us blind to similar disparities in sentencing for other crimes. Perhaps your column might spark conversation encouraging sentence reform in all areas.
Finally, certain deviant sexual behavior might be better dealt with, perhaps even treated and cured, if dealt with objectively. By pushing these offenders further and further from the mainstream, we have eliminated virtually all hope of any form of rehabilitation. This undoubtedly costs society more in the long run, in terms of increased homelessness and probably higher recidivism rates.

    Thanks for your thought-provoking articles.

    Keep up the good work!

Your writing is spot on. Politicians without term-limits is all about power and the ability to get re-elected time after time. Term-limits could help us to get our elected officials to act as true “Statesmen” where their motivations and actions would reflect what is truly in the best interests of the Nation and its citizens. Our Nation needs more “Statesmen” and less “Politicians”.
